Creating a 21st Century Classroom

From 2009-2010, I had the opportunity to create a 21st century classroom. I feel that the ideal classroom celebrates and honors the people in it. The physical space is bright and cheerful. The furniture is mobile and versatile. I have said in workshops, “Pedagogy is not driven by the furniture layout.” Tools for learning, and yes, you can read technology here, are accessible and help students discover new things about the world and about themselves.

  1. Hi Samantha,
I happened upon your blog researching Digital Storytelling for a course I’m taking. Then, I clicked on your 21st Century Classroom page. Wow! I have been interested in classroom design for sometime now and have been looking for someone like you. I enjoyed watching your Prezi, both envious of your opportunity and impressed by your results. Love it! I hope to do more to foster the 21st century learning model through my own classroom design.
As an elementary school teacher, I’m very interested in the collaborative tables, and the collection of desks along the wall. I think honoring private workspace and introverts is important too. Anyway, just wanted to tell you that I enjoy your blog and the work you do!

    • Hi Rachel,

Thanks so much for your comments. Good luck with all you do to move education into the 21st century!

      Samantha
